Maine Unemployment Extension

If you’ve recently lost your job and you need to obtain Maine unemployment benefits or a Maine Unemployment Extension, there are a few things you need to do to qualify and receive benefits.  Unemployment benefits are excellent stopgaps against the undesirable financial situation that can arise after losing a job.

Of course, you’ll have to provide the Department of Labor with your Social Security Number and details of your employment.  You’ll have to show proof from your employer that you were employed during a certain period of time.  Generally, a signed affidavit or letter from the Human Resources Department or your business owner can serve this purpose.  The name and address of all businesses where you’ve been employed for the last year and a half, and your job titles and duties are required, as well.

You can file a claim online for first-time unemployment benefits, but for a Maine Unemployment Extension, you’ll have to fill out a paper application.  You can either go to your local Department of Labor office, or download and complete the form located on the website.  However, once your claim for an emergency extension is granted, you can file your weekly reports and claims online at the website for the Maine Department of Labor.  The Department recommends downloading and mailing in the form, as that will guarantee the fastest processing possible.  You can apply for up to 13 weeks of additional unemployment compensation if you’re still out of work at the end of your standard 20 weeks of benefits.

If you remain unemployed, and you no longer qualify for additional unemployment benefits, you can obtain an emergency extension as long as you are actively seeking employment.  Generally, the Department mails the forms automatically shortly after your regular unemployment benefits expire, but if there’s a delay, take the initiative and obtain and complete the form yourself.
